The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) said on Sunday improvements have been made in decreasing maternal and child mortality in the country, but post-delivery bleeding among mothers still remains a concern in this respect.

An MoPH advisor Khawja Qamaruddin Sediqi told a gathering that 56 percent of women who die giving birth, die as a result of bleeding.

"Bleeding after delivery is one of the main reasons for maternal mortality," he said.

According to United Nations, at least 54,000 children die annually before and after birth due to a lack of hygienic services.

"The current UN estimates for under five child mortality demonstrated and annual reduction rate of 2.7 percent," said Rolf, a representative of UNICEF.

"We know that majority of death related to preeclampsia and eclampsia could be avoided if women receive timely and effective care," said William Slitter, a representative of USAID.
