ANSF Launches Kunduz Operation To Retake Qala-e-Zal

The Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) launched a large-scale military operation early Tuesday morning, involving hundreds of soldiers, to retake Qala-e-Zal district of Kunduz province which collapsed to the Taliban 10 days ago, security officials said.

According to security officials, foreign forces are providing the Afghan troops with air support and are targeting insurgent strongholds.

Qala-e-Zal district is a strategic district in Kunduz province which collapsed to the Taliban on May 6 after two days of heavy clashes between the insurgent group and security forces.

According to officials from Pamir's 20 Corps so far one insurgent has been killed and two others wounded.

Officials said security forces were by mid-Tuesday morning only 200 meters from the district governor’s building but were being slowed down due to the high number of mines planted by the Taliban.

So far there are no details about security or civilian casualties.

Taliban has not yet commented on the operation.
