Govt Accused Of Violating The Law Over Cabinet Issue

A number of lawmakers and analysts on Thursday accused government of violating the country’s law as it has “failed” to introduce new nominees to replace the seven cabinet ministers who were dismissed by parliament last year.

They claimed that President Ashraf Ghani and CEO Abdullah Abdullah are pushing to appoint ministers by keeping in mind their political interests so that these minister are not able to oppose their decisions.

Helai Ershad, an MP from Kabul, said the president and the CEO are not able to make “an independent” decision about the appointment of new ministers.

“They (government leaders) want someone who nods to their orders and who always says yes to them,” Ershad said.

“The president (Ashraf Ghani) has pursued a political view on all aspects; not only on the cabinet,” said political analyst Bashir Bezhan.

Meanwhile, the CEO’s office said government will soon announce new candidates to replace the acting ministers.

“We continue our efforts to complete the cabinet in the near future,” Abdullah’s deputy spokesman Jawed Faisal said at a press conference on Thursday.

Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of Parliament) removed seven ministers over development budget spending issues in November.

However, government rejected parliament’s decision and sent the case to the Supreme Court to interpret the constitution regarding the termination of cabinet members. However the Supreme Court has not yet issued a ruling.

The seven ministers who failed to receive votes of confidence from the lawmakers include Foreign Affairs minister Salahuddin Rabbani, Labor and Social Affairs minister Nasrin Oryakhail, Public Works minister Mahmoud Baligh, Education minister Assadullah Hanif Balkhi, Transport and Civil Aviation minister Mohammadullah Batash, minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdul Raza Wahidi and Higher Education minister Farida Mohmand.

Currently, the Ministry of Information and Culture and the Ministry of Borders and Tribal Affairs are also run by acting ministers.
