IEC To Decide On Fate Of Its Suspended Official Saturday

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) would review the graft charges against the site operational chief of the election management body on Saturday.

Qalam Yar, the IEC site operational chief, was suspended after the release of a telephonic conversation in which he asks an IEC official in a province for 500,000 AFs.

The audio tape is being reviewed, said the IEC secretariat chief Imam Mohammad Warimach.

The IEC officials said sending Qalam Yar to the Attorney General’s Office, firing him from his post or issuing him a warrant letter would be the decisions which will be made on Saturday.

“IEC leadership is committed to bringing positive change. We will see that (on Saturday) a warrant letter will be issued (against the IEC official), or he will be introduced to the Attorney General’s Office, or he will be fired,” Warimach said.

Qalam Yar however rejected the allegations, calling it a conspiracy from the head of IEC secretariat against him.

“This is a conspiracy,” he said. “A fake evidence has been made against me. This is completely a personal issue and it is being conducted by (the head of IEC secretariat Imam Mohammad) Warimach.”

Election monitoring organizations said corruption in the leadership of the IEC is harmful for the elections.

“The legal and judicial institutions must interfere in this issue, because this case can get more complicated and can expand to its the next levels and even the institution can lose its legitimacy after this,” said Yusuf Rasheed, CEO of Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan.
