Jamiat Split As Supporters Defy New Interim Council

Members of Afghanistan’s Jamiat-e-Islami party on Thursday expressed their anger at being barred from Tuesday’s meeting between top members of the party in Kabul where they announced a new interim leadership council.

These angry members, who call themselves the Jamiat integration council, said the recent meeting in Kabul was not acceptable to them, suggesting a party congress should be convened as soon as possible.

Speakers at Thursday's gathering defied the recent move and said that the new leadership council was formed on the basis of nepotism.

They called for swift action to convene a congress and to hold elections within the party.

“This is not an appropriate decision and it has been met with the satisfaction of Jamiat members,” said Sayed Ekram Massoumi, a Jamiat member.

“They should consult the important members of Jamiat and then appoint a council,” said Jamiat member Qazi Raz Mohammad.

“This is the question of the future of a political party which is more than 60 or 70 years old, the party should not be exploited for personal interests” said Jamiat member Abdul Wadoud Samit.

They urged Jamiat leaders to announce the date for a party congress.

“Lets convene the congress and go towards the elections,” said Jamiat member Abdul Hadi Safai.

In response to this, Jamiat spokesman said the party would convene a congress.

“The interim leadership council of Jamiat-e-Islami Afghanistan also committed to convene the party congress within a year,” said Jamiat spokesman Waqif Hakimi.

The office of the CEO has also reacted over reports that his name was not included in the new leadership council.

“For now he (CEO Abdullah Abdullah) has not been in the leadership council of Jamiat-e-Islami Afghanistan due to him being busy and his political post,” said CEO deputy spokesman Jawed Faisal.

On Tuesday, leaders from the Jamiat-e-Islami party convened a high level meeting of party members in Kabul where the party leaders announced a new interim leadership council and increased the number of its members to 64 from nine members in the past.
