Press Freedom ‘One Of Our Biggest Achievements’

CEO Abdullah Abdullah on Sunday said at a gathering to mark Journalists Day that press freedom was one of the greatest achievements of the past 15 years.

Speaking at a function at Afghanistan’s Journalist Center (AFJC), Abdullah stressed that threats against journalists was not acceptable and that all cases of violence against journalists must be investigated.

“Every case should be investigated, but investigating such cases (violence against journalists) can prevent other such incidents. We are committed to investigate such cases,” he said.

“The media is one of our achievements and government also regularly, in national and international meetings, mentions the media,” said Sayed Fazel Sancharaki, deputy of the publication department for the Ministry of Culture and Information.

According to an AFJC report threats against journalists have increased.

“This year in addition to the Taliban, the newly emerged group, Daesh, also started to threaten journalists and journalists face numerous challenges in doing their jobs,” said Ahmad Quraishi, a member of AFJC.

According to the AFJC report, 95 cases of violence cases including insulting, threatening and putting pressure on journalists and destructive actions against media facilities in provinces have recorded this solar year.

According to the report, seven journalists were killed this solar year in different incidents in the country which shows a slight decrease against last year.
