Regional Countries Siding With Taliban Against Daesh: Stanekzai

Chief of Afghanistan’s intelligence service - National Directorate of Security (NDS) - Masoum Stanekzai on Tuesday said that some countries in the region are cooperating with the Taliban in the battle against Daesh.

Stanekzai made the remarks during a question and answer session in the Meshrano Jirga (Upper House Of Parliament) where top security officials informed senators about the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan.

Stanekzai’s remarks came as reports continue to emerge over the alleged association between the Taliban and Russia and Iran.

The NDS chief meanwhile said Daesh operatives were foreign militants who had infiltrated the country from tribal belts in Pakistan following a lengthy military operation against them by Pakistani forces.

Stanekzai added that a fragile political environment is in place in Afghanistan and that this impacts the security situation.

“Some individuals step by step entered through Chitral toward Badakhshan, Nuristan and Kunar, they came here as a result of the operation (Pakistan’s military operation against Taliban),” added Stanekzai.

In recent months, so-called poor war management has sparked outrage among Afghans in the country - especially following reports of new ties between Taliban and Russia and Iran.

“We offered our own logics to find whether its right or not, but some countries are pursuing their own objectives; Russia, Iran and other countries said that the Taliban were better than Daesh, so let’s help Daesh to curb the advance of Daesh,” said Stanekzai.

At the session, the security ministers anticipated that the country would continue to face attacks by insurgents.

“Each responsible ministry has outlined their own programs for maintaining security and to further prepare the security forces,” said Minister of Interior Taj Mohammad Jahed.

“During the winter we plan to pursue the biometric process of our personnel and vehicles and weapons in order to bring transparency in this respect,” said Defense Minister Abdullah Habibi.

The security officials pledged to improve the war strategy by taking solid steps to fight insurgency and also to undertake fresh efforts to mobilize Afghan security forces.

Stanekzai said the recent attack on MP Mir Wali’s house in Kabul was plotted by insurgents in Chaman district of Pakistan’s Baluchistan province, adding that an intelligence lapse prevented security forces from foiling the plot.
