Rights Watchdog Reacts To Kangaroo Court Incident In Faryab

The Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) on Friday reacted to a kangaroo court incident in which a girl was lashed in Faryab for alleged affairs with a man from her relatives.

The commission said it has registered nine cases of kangaroo court incidents in last 12 months.

Anti-government armed groups and local powerful men have been involved in organizing the courts.

“Unfortunately, this year we have witnessed nine kangaroo court incidents in different parts of the country. These incidents are inhuman. Mostly innocent individuals have been killed or have been subjected to various kinds of violence,” CEO of AIHRC Musa Mahmoudi said.

Faryab police confirmed that last month a kangaroo court was held in Kohistanat district in the province in which a girl and a man were lashed by militants on charges of having affairs.

Faryab police spokesman Abdul Karim Yuresh said the incident took place in an area which is out of government's control.

“A girl and a boy had escaped together from Lefray village in Kohistanat district, but when they returned to their houses after mediation of elders, they were lashed by the Taliban. This area is far from government-controlled regions,” said Yuresh.

A commander of public uprising, Muhibullah Mirzad, meanwhile said Lefray village fallen to Taliban seven months ago.

“Lefray area is 25km far from the center of Kohistanat district and currently it is under control of insurgents. If the area was under government's control, at least such incident would have been prohibited,” said Merzad.

The Attorney General's Office (AGO) spokesman Jamshid Rasooli said they will probe any cases that refers to them.

“The Attorney General's Office probes cases that happen. This is not the only case; we receive thousands of cases of violence against women, every year,” said Rasooli.

Taliban has not confirmed that they have held the court.
