War Is Fueling Illegal Migration: Mohaqeq

CEO Abdullah Abdullah’s second deputy Mohammad Mohaqeq on Wednesday said that war and violence in Afghanistan has been one of the main reasons for the migration of Afghans.

He also expressed concern over what he described was a systematic transfer of Daesh fighters to Afghanistan.

“The process of systematic transfer of terrorism particularly Daesh and its outfits to Afghanistan has taken on a new dimension and it has created major concern among the people of Afghanistan,” said Mohaqeq.

Addressing delegates at the Third Scientific Conference on Immigration in Kabul on Wednesday, Mohaqeq said that war and violence have been the main reasons for illegal migration and that this needs to be addressed.

Meanwhile, Tadamichi Yamamoto, UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has said that an end to the ongoing war in Afghanistan was crucial so as to control the outflux of refugees and pave the way for the safe repatriation of Afghan refugees from other countries.

“To ensure that these citizens can return to Afghanistan with safety and dignity, there must be an end to the conflict through peace settlement, the UN family in Afghanistan remains committed to  supporting an Afghan-owned and Afghan-led peace process which is inclusive and protects the rights of all citizens,” he said.

According to Mohaqeq, a surge in activity of militant groups and in the war has been forcing the people to think about migration.

“The national unity government has managed to attract the trust of refugees for repatriation,” said Sayed Hussain Alimi Balkhi, minister of refugees and reparations.

Balkhi said that over 400,000 Afghans have been repatriated from neighboring countries since the start of the current year.

According to statistics of the ministry of refugees, currently there are 5.6 million Afghan refugees living abroad and from the figure, 519,273 live in US and Australia, 487,399 in European countries, over two million in Iran and 1.5 million in Pakistan.
