Two years back in April 2009 Ustad Jalil Zaland, a renowned Afghan singer, composer and poet, passed away in Tarzana in California, US.
Jalil Zaland, one of the biggest of music stars in Afghan sky, was born in 1935 in Kabul.
He was one of the first Afghan amateur singers who was running Afghan music department during the fifties.
Along with other amateur singers he made tireless efforts to improve Afghan pop music then.
He along with Salim Sarmast and Nangyalai, Afghan singers and composers, made the first Afghan amateur band for Afghanistan Radio, which later became well-known in the region.
After the establishment of a youth music band a number of Afghan youths including Ahmad Wali, Ahmad Zaher, Zaher Howaida, Ahmad Shaker, Hamed Shokran, Hashem Qaiyumi, Afsana and Salam Khanem recorded some of the biggest and immortal songs in the music history of the country.
He was also the composer of Afghan national anthem during the reins of Mohammad Zaher Shah, President Mohammad Daud Khan and Hafizullah Amin.
He made several trips to Iran in line with his profession and further and established good relationship with Iranian singers.
Zaland's family is consisted of big stars of music. His spouse Sarah Zaland, his daughters Sohaila Zaland and Shahlah Zaland, and among his sons Farid Zaland and Waheed Zaland are successful singers and music directors who are live abroad.
