Banks Not Allowing Pledged Increase of Withdrawals, Say Residents

The citizens of Afghanistan expressed concerns over the lack of implementation of a pledge which was released by the Da Central Bank raising the withdrawal limits of funds from the private banks.

The residents of Kabul urged the Central Bank to honor the statement that it issued—which allows an increased amount of withdrawn funds--into effect.

According to them, the statement determined the withdrawal limit as 50,000 Afs in a week, but people are still facing problems withdrawing their money from the banks in accordance with the statement.

“The money that we withdraw is still much less, which means that the amount is as before, which was $200 in 10-days,” said Abdul Qudos, a resident of Kabul.

“I come at 8:00 am until end of the official work hour. You see here that the people are many. The people do not have the chance to withdraw their money and some people who come late will be delayed for tomorrow,” said Ajmal, a resident of Kabul.

The residents of Kabul meanwhile called on the banks to provide funds to their clients on time.

“I request that the money should be provided on time and based on what they (the Central Bank) said, so that the society can meet their needs and it can also increase the number of clients,” said Jamal Nasir, a resident of Kabul.

This comes as economists said there should be further resources in the banking system for clients.

“Any bank that takes such actions will have a negative impact on its title and brand and this in general can affect the financial system of Afghanistan,” said Seyar Qureshi, an economist.

The Central Bank did not comment on it.

Nearly two weeks ago, the Central Bank in a statement announced that the amount of withdrawal in one round increased but the banks have yet to implement the statement.
