Jamiat Threatens To Launch Protests Over Noor Saga

The Jamiat-e-Islami Afghanistan party has threatened to launch widespread rallies across the country if government does not revise its decision over Atta Mohammad Noor’s resignation as Balkh governor.

The party's deputy head said they will have no choice but to resort to military options if government continues its 'abhorrent' acts and ignores Jamiat’s demands.

“If government does not pay attention to revise its decision on the issue, the next option includes civic moves not only in Balkh but across Afghanistan, in the north, north-east, south, west. All people are ready to act,” said Zabi Fetrat, Jamiat’s deputy head.

Meanwhile, the head of Balkh Provincial Council Afzal Hadid said he questions the silence of CEO Abdullah Abdullah over the approval of Noor's resignation.

“He (should) consider it as his historical responsibly to raise his voice, if not in defense of Atta Mohammad Noor, but for those who voted for him and expected him to raise his voice. I am sorry that you are still silent,” he said.

However, Balkh security officials said the issue will not affect security in the province.

“We have not seen any negative impact on security of Mazar-e-Sharif City and we have not received any complaints too,” said Abdul Razaq Qaderi, Security Officer at Balkh Police Chief's office.
