Energy Sector Growth is Priority: Officials

The Islamic Emirate has made the energy sector one of its work priorities in order to achieve the country's self-sufficiency in the economic sector.

A statement of the Economic Commission of the Prime Minister's Office said that currently Afghanistan imports electricity, gas and oil from other countries and there is a need to solve the challenges in this field by implementing programs.

According to the statement, the Islamic Emirate is trying to speed up the projects of hydro and solar power generation and oil extraction from the Amu river.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman of the Islamic Emirate, said that Afghanistan needs enough energy for industrialization, and efforts are underway to invest in this field.

Mujahid said: The economic plans of the Islamic Emirate is that our priority should be to supplement energy. The issue that is very harmful to the country is that even now we buy electricity from neighboring countries, which amounts to $360 million dollars annually, and if we spend this money on energy inside the country, we can provide our energy for two years.”

A number of economic experts called this important for the Islamic Emirate to pay attention to the energy sector and added that this can help to improve the country's economy.

“Afghanistan is considered one of the powerful countries with potential energy. If it is water energy, it has about 85 million cubic meters of water, and if it is solar, it has about 300 days of sunshine. More attention in this sector has a good result in the dynamics of the country's economy,” said Abdul Zohor Mudaber, an economic expert.

“If the Islamic Emirate pays attention to the energy sector, we can be self-sufficient from the import mode, I am sure that we can make a large percentage of the country's needs and we have to try to make an exporter country," said Ahmad Ferdaws Behguzin, an economic expert.

Earlier, the Ministry of Economy (MoE) said that in the past year, it has completed 179 projects worth more than $27 billion afghani, among which are some electricity projects.
