FARAKHABAR: Tillerson's Trip To Bagram Discussed

The US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson paid an unexpected visit to Afghanistan on Monday where he discussed a range of issues with President Ashraf Ghani and CEO Abdullah Abdullah and made it clear that Pakistan needs to take action to undermine the support the Taliban and other terrorist organizations receive in Pakistan.

Addressing some members of the press after his meeting with the National Unity Government (NUG) leaders at Bagram Airfield outside Kabul, Tillerson said he felt it was important for him to visit Afghanistan while in South Asia – particularly in the wake of the recently announced South Asia policy by the Trump administration.

He said the US wants to work with regional partners to ensure that there are no threats in the region and that the strategy is a regional effort.

“So we’re demanding others also deny safe haven to terrorists anywhere in the region. We are working closely with Pakistan in that regard as well,” as well.

He said this was not only about peace efforts in Afghanistan but that it was also to ensure a secure and stable Pakistan.

Pakistan needs to “take a clear-eyed view of the situation that they’re confronted with in terms of the number of terrorist organizations that find safe haven inside of Pakistan. And so we want to work closely with Pakistan to create a more stable and secure Pakistan as well,” he said.

In this episode of FaraKhabar, host Fawad Aman discusses the topic with Abdul Qayom Sajadi, an MP and Dawa Khan Menapal, deputy spokesman for President.
