As we celebrate the 98th anniversary of Afghanistan's Independence, we should ask why King Amanullah’s reforms failed, reforms that ended slavery, the involvement of women and the revival of education in the country. 
 
But did the king, who said once "I'm not a reckless fancier," adhere to the ideals of constitutionalism and libertarians until the end?
