Afghan U-23 Football Team Heads for Saudi Arabia

Afghanistan’s under-23 football team left Kabul for Saudi Arabia on Sunday where they will take part in the qualifying rounds of the AFC U-23 Championship China 2018.

With about 40 participating nations, the ten group winners and five best second-placed teams among the groups will advance to the finals.

“We cannot make predictions in the game of football, but we hope to perform well in our matches to bring a title back for Afghanistan,” said Ilyas Manochehr, the U-23 team coach.

The qualifiers will take place from July 19 to 23, in the respective host countries which are Kyrgyz Republic, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Palestine, Myanmar, South Korea, Thailand and China.

Afghanistan is in Group B and will play Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

Their first match is on Wednesday against Iraq.

Over the past two months, the team has played a series of practice rounds with different teams in Kabul ahead of the upcoming matches.

“The team is well prepared, we completed our warm up in Kabul and played several friendly matches,” said team member Fardin Kohistani.

“We continued our preparations over the past two months, the morale of all team members is very high, InshaAllah we will bring back good results,” said another team member Rahmatullah Khairkhaw.
