Antonio Guterres Urges Restraint to Avert Crisis in Middle East

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, warned that the Middle East faces the real danger of a devastating and full-scale conflict.

At the Emergency Meeting on the Iranian Airborne Attack against Israel, Antonio Guterres called on Iran and Israel to exercise restraint and refrain from escalating tensions.

"The Middle East is on the brink. The people of the region are confronting a real danger of a devastating, full scale conflict. Now is the time to defuse and de-escalate. Now is the time for maximum restraint,” he said.

The Emergency Meeting on the Iranian Airborne Attack against Israel was held at the request of Israel.

At this meeting, representatives from Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and several other countries condemned Iran's attack on Israel and described it as a threat to the peace and security of the region and the world.

“Iran's reckless actions not only posed a threat to populations in Israel, but also to other U.N. member states in the region, including Jordan and Iraq. The Security Council has an obligation to not let Iran's actions go unanswered,” said Robert A. Wood, the United States representative at the UN.

Barbara Woodward, the United Kingdom's representative at the United Nations, said: "The United Kingdom is also continuing to work urgently alongside the international community to stabilize the situation and prevent further escalation."

"By deciding on such an unprecedented action, Iran is taking a new level in its destabilizing actions and is taking the risk of a military escalation for which it would be responsible. We call on Iran and its allies to finally and without further delay cease their destabilizing activities throughout the region," said Nathalie Broadhurst, Deputy Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations.

Gilad Erdan, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations, said: " Designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terror organization. Action must be taken now, not for Israel's sake, not for the region's sake, but for the world's sake. Stop Iran today."

Meanwhile, representatives from Russia and China, while criticizing Israel, called on Tehran and Tel Aviv to refrain from provocative military actions.

"In this regard, we note the signals set by Tehran that they do not seek a further military escalation against Israel and we urge the West and Jerusalem to follow suit and reject the practice of provocative use of force in the Middle East,” Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia said.

Dai Bing, Chargé d'Affaires of the Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations, said: "We have also noted that according to Iran, its military action was in response to Israel's aggression against its diplomatic premises, and the matter can be deemed concluded. China calls on the parties concerned to show maximum calm and restraint and resolve their differences and disputes in accordance with the purposes of the UN Charter and international law to avert any further escalations."

The representative of Iran described the recent attack on Israel as self-defense and emphasized that Tehran is not seeking to expand conflicts in the region.

"Iran is never seeking to contribute to the spillover of the conflict in the region, nor does it to escalate or spread the tension to the entire region," said Iranian ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani.

The UN Secretary-General once again called on Iran and Israel to exercise restraint and refrain from escalating tensions.
