Iran Tests New Missile Despite Washington’s Warnings

Iran announced on Saturday it had successfully tested a new medium-range missile, the Khoramshahr, despite Washington’s warning that it was ready to scrap a nuclear deal.

According to Iran’s Press TV, video footage broadcast by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) on Friday showed the missile launched from an unknown location.

This came just hours after the missile was unveiled during a military parade in Tehran.

According to Press TV, the missile is capable of carrying multiple warheads and has a range of 2,000km.

Iran has repeatedly stated its military capabilities are solely for defense purposes and they pose no threat to other countries. However, Washington has on several occasions slapped new sanctions against Iran over its missile program.

Press TV stated that the US claims that Iran's missile tests and rocket launches violate UN Resolution 2231, which was adopted in July 2015 to endorse the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany.

But Iran has strongly rejected the US allegations that it has violated the UN resolution and that the missiles are not designed to carry nuclear warheads.
