Sharp Rise In Child Migrants Recorded In Calais

Charity organizations this week said there had been an increase in arrivals in Calais, France, over the past few weeks, despite the clearance of the camp previously known as “The Jungle”.

According to Tina Brocklebank, from Help Refugees, the arrivals were “predominantly” minors.

"There is a massive increase in the amount of people that are around, predominantly they are minors so this is 18 and under. Generally it's between the ages of 14 and 18 we're seeing and numbers are growing."

Brocklebank said: "Absolutely they're unaccompanied. We've met young people, 14, 16, in small groups, on their own."

AP reported that this comes after the UK government on Thursday suspended the law, termed the Dubs amendment, allowing up to 3,000 unaccompanied minors into the country – citing fears that people traffickers were exploiting the system.

According to AP, about 350 children will be allowed in – opposed to the original 3,000. Reports indicate that of the 350 children, 200 have already been taken in to the UK.
