Afghans Complain of Surge in Unemployment

Afghans complained about the surge of unemployment in the country and asked the government to address the problem.

Officials at the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs say that over 100,000 people have been employed in different positions of government administrations.

“The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has provided employment opportunities for 110,000 youth since the start of current year [1402]. They have been employed both in government and private sector,” said Samiullah Ibrahimi, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.

Afghans, mostly young people, say that despite having higher education in different fields, they cannot find jobs and have been left jobless for years.

They say that they have applied for government positions several times but could not get one.

“In the past one year, I went to many places, applied for jobs and was also shortlisted, but referrals still work in government which means someone should refer you to get a job,” said Muhammad Yahya, a Kabul resident.

“We ask the current government to provide employment opportunities for youth, for those who are educated,” said Muhammad Iqbal, a resident of Kabul.

“Youth are the future makers of a country, they should be provided government opportunities after they finish university,” said Ramin, a Kabul resident.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs plans to convene a national conference of work next solar month (Hot).
