Dozens Feared Dead in Rockslides, Avalanches in Nuristan, Panjshir

Rockslides and avalanches on Monday in Nuristan and an avalanche in Panjshir on Sunday night have resulted in the confirmed deaths or likely deaths of around 30 people, local authorities say.

Samiul Haq Haqbayan, the head of the information and culture department of Nuristan, said that more than 25 people died in the Norgaram district of the province on Monday.

According to Samiul Haq Haqbayan, 7 bodies have been extracted from the debris and 6 houses have been completely destroyed and 14 houses have been partially destroyed.

“6 houses have been destroyed completely in which 25 to 30 bodies were buried. So far 6 to 7 bodies have been found and all the governmental personnel of the Norgram district have been sent to the area to find the remaining bodies,” he said.

The spokesman of Panjshir’s security command said that two miners died and another person was injured due to an avalanche in this province.

“Three of our compatriots were buried under the snow in Mukani village of Hese-Awal district of Panjshir province, two died and another was reached by security forces but was injured,” said Abedullah Farooqi, the spokesman of Panjshir’s security command.

The residents of Nuristan and Panjshir asked the authorities to take measures to help the victims of natural events.

“The event which happened in Tatin Nekarak area destroyed more than 10 houses, 9 bodies have been found and others are under the soil still. People have gone to the area but they can’t work there because there is snow,” said Hamid, a resident of Nuristan.

“For the safety of the people in this disaster, we want the government to send aid to this area as soon as possible,” said Nooryad Shah, a resident of Panjshir.

On Sunday the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation warned of storms, floods, and severe snow and rains in some provinces of the country.
