Attorney General Calls For An End To Arbitrary Detentions

Farid Hamidi, the Attorney General of Afghanistan, on Tuesday directed attorney general offices across the country to bring an end to the practice of arbitrary detentions.

He said prosecutors should respect the status, dignity and freedom of citizens and avoid arbitrary detentions.

“A few hours of detention could spoil the status and dignity of a person and a family, therefore I recommend that prosecutors should be professional in their work and avoid arbitrary and unnecessary detentions,” said Hamidi.

He also pledged to appoint woman attorneys in 31 provinces in the near future.

Women attorneys meanwhile said their role is crucial in efforts to reduce violence in the country.

“A woman can’t tell a man about her problems, but she can share it with women, therefore we need to increase the presence of women in the legal and judicial institutions,” said one female prosecutor, Basmina.

“The role of female prosecutors across the country, particularly in insecure areas, is crucial. Female prosecutors will play an important role in curbing violence against women,” said Leena, a prosecutor.

“Within one month, female prosecutors should start working in 31 provinces and serve the women,” added Hamidi.
