Efforts Underway To Clean Up War-Torn Kunduz City

The Kunduz City Municipality has kick-started a massive clean up operation to restore some order to the war-torn city.

Some of the projects being implemented by the municipality include road and alley maintenance and the establishment of at least four parks for residents.

As a result of the project, jobs for 550 people have also been created – including women.

The formerly unemployed Kunduz residents, who are each paid 9,000 AFs a month, have welcomed the move.

According to Mohammad Dawood, a municipal worker: “We are serving the people and keeping the city clean.”

“On the one hand, this program keeps our city clean and on the other hand it has created job opportunities for 550 people,” said Jawed Zakhil, another municipal worker.

The establishment of parks meanwhile has been a move widely welcomed by the community.

A visit by TOLOnews to one of these parks found that numerous women and children also used the recreational areas for relaxation.

“Women can come with their families here to have some fun,” Shogufa Ahmadi, a resident of Kunduz said.

“I have come with my sisters to the park to spend some time here,” said Hanif, another Kunduz resident.

“We thank those who have established these parks,” said Neda, another grateful resident.

Meanwhile, lights in some city streets have been installed – another move that has been welcomed by residents.

“We have some other projects for the city and after their implementation the city will become more beautiful,” said Kunduz Mayor, Najibullah Omarkhel.

As the city’s appearance slowly improves, so too is the mood of the people as many say that with these changes, people could one day lead a normal life.
