MPs Approve Mid-term Budget

The majority of lawmakers in Afghanistan’s Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of Parliament) on Wednesday approved the mid-term budget before breaking for their summer recess.

However, MPs disagreed over 92 new projects brought by government in the mid-term budget - for the construction of schools in some provinces.

Some angry MPs opposed the budget completely and accused parliament’s administrative board and the budget commission of making deals with government.

Parliament’s budget commission strongly rejected the allegations.

Government allocated an additional 12 billion AFs to the mid-term budget but 6 billion AFs was cut.

The total budget for the year is now 401 billion AFs.

Parliament’s budget commission ordered a mid-term budget cut of 6 billion AFs.

“Taking the current financial limitations into consideration and in light of past experiences, the spending of the development budget has not been in a good shape,” said Mohammad Azim Mohseni, head of parliament’s budget commission.

Parliament speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi meanwhile said: “It was over 394 billion AFs (the budget), and an additional (6 billion AFs) has now been added to this in the mid term.”

One MP meanwhile raised the issue of little development being carried out in provinces.

“A lot of the revenue comes from our provinces, but little focus is paid to them,” said MP Farhad Azimi.
