UN Reacts to Executions in Afghanistan

Following the execution of a murderer in Jawzjan province, and four others recently in various parts of the country, a United Nations spokesperson at a press briefing publically condemned the practice.

The spokesperson for the UN secretary general said that the UN will continue to stand against the use of the death penalty.

"The public nature of execution is extremely heinous, and we continue to stand against the use of the death penalty,” said Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the Secretary-General.

The Islamic Emirate on the other hand said that Qisas (retributive execution) is a Sharia decree, and that the insulting of Islamic values is not acceptable.

The spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate asked the world to respect Islamic values.

“Qisas is a Sharia decree, and we will not allow others to criticize the process or speak against the values of the Afghan people. If it is proved that someone killed someone, the Qisas should be sentenced for him,” said Zabiullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Islamic Emriate.

“Our penalties should be based on justice, the judge should be just, impartial and try to substantiate the crime,” said Abdul Qadir Qanet, a religious scholar.

According to information of the high court of the Islamic Emirate, five people have been executed in Laghman, Jawzjan, Farah and Ghazni provinces since the government came to power.
