Severe Weather Claims The Lives Of 47 People In Jawzjan

Halima Sadat, a Jawzjan provincial council member, said that 47 people have died in the Darzab district due to the severe weather that has gripped the province.

According to Sadat, heavy snowfalls closed off access to health care facilities for people while the lack of proper shelter was also a problem.

More than 70cm of snow has fallen in Darzab district in the past few days and a number of homes have been damaged, said Sadat.

On Saturday the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) said that at least 21 people had died in the past few weeks due to the cold weather and heavy snowfalls in parts of the country.

They said in a statement that the bad weather had claimed the lives of at least 21 people in 15 provinces and a further 16 people have had to receive medical treatment.

Provinces hit by severe weather recently include Kandahar, Ghazni, Paktia, Ghor, Zabul, Baghlan, Nangarhar, Kunar, Kapisa, Nuristan, Parwan, Herat, Laghman, Bamiyan and Panjsher, read the statement.

Currently main roads in the northern and central provinces are closed due to heavy snowfall.
