US Spends One Trillion USD on Afghan War

The United States has spent nearly $1 trillion of U.S. taxpayer dollars on the war in Afghanistan, 80 percent of which has taken place during the presidency of Barack Obama, according to a Financial Times (FT) investigation.

The report states that the Afghan war has been the longest and most expensive war in America's history; however, Afghan analysts believe no convincing security and stability has been achieved during the past 13 years.

According to FT's calculations and independent researchers, Washington intends to spend several hundred billion dollars more after the withdrawal at the end of this month.

The report stated that approximately $104 billion of that money has gone to reconstruction efforts that have included hundreds of projects.

Financial Times reports that about $500 million has been spent on fighter planes that are now scrap metal and $80 million on consulate buildings.

Moreover, a base in southwestern Afghanistan cost $34 million, patrol boats cost $3 million, industrial incinerators cost $5.4 million and trucks equipped to broadcast live sports games still under cover in Kabul cost $3.6 million.

On the other hand, reports suggest the Taliban have also spent a large amount of money in their fighting. Drugs production and smuggling, funds from Pakistan and Gulf States, illegal mining and extortions from people are said to be the major financial sources for the Taliban.

But according to the Afghan analysts, despite that billions of dollars have been spent in the war against the Taliban, the Afghan people have yet to achieve peace and stability.

"Although, the war in Afghanistan has been America's longest and most expensive war, unfortunately it has had no positive outcome due to lack of a genuine strategy," analyst Malik Setez said. "Pakistan has played the most destructive role during this war."

Others believe the wastage of U.S. funds have also caused widespread corruption in Afghanistan. They link Afghanistan's fourth position in the list of the world's corrupt countries to the wastage of U.S. funds during the past 13 years.
